What is online reputation management?
Luxury hotels, e-commerce businesses, and thought leaders all depend on reputation to stay profitable or even survive. A significant proportion of their budgets are spent on marketing and building a strong positive brand reputation. The Internet is big business. There are approximately 4.79 billion people actively using the Internet. In other words, 59% of the world's population are active users of the Internet. 3.96 billion are active users of social media.
The Internet reputation of business leaders and entrepreneurs marketing online and offline is more important at this time than ever before. Luxury hotels are also heavily reliant on a perfect online image. Positive online reviews posted by former hotel guests are like gold dust since two or three testimonials of bad experiences at the top of an organic search can sink any chance of a sales conversion.
In our experienced view you should never let damaging content about you or your business remain on the Internet. Further, you should not target the content but the person or persons responsible for posting the material.
Why is reputation on the Internet so important?
Here is why. Any marketing specialist will tell you that customer trust in the services industry is the most valuable business currency. This trust statement is true for offline and online businesses. Building trust quickly is even more critical for online transactions.
Online customers are making quick buying decisions on minimal information. If for example, you are marketing an online course or rooms at a luxury hotel, then your conversions will be severely impacted by harmful content.
Even if your website marketing is reliable, i.e., you have a great website with the right keywords, thousands of page views, hits and impressions per day, most customers will still research you on the Internet before making a final buying decision. It is unlikely that any customer will choose your course or hotel over your competitors if you have disparaging content about you online.
The perpetrators of the false, damaging content need to be pursued in person, removing the review is not enough. If you target the review alone, there is nothing to stop the same person or people from posting disparaging content on the same site again or on other websites.
If you are still undecided about what priority should be placed on removing harmful online content, here are some startling statistics.
More than 50% of online users will double-check you and your business online for reviews and testimonials before a conversion. Less than 30% will check out your offline presence or discuss their buying decisions with family and friends.
According to Forbes COVID-19 has pushed up Internet usage by 70%. One of the best ways to meet the challenge of making sales in 2020 is to build and protect your online reputation.
